Staff Software Engineer, Web Application Services

Role overview

A fully remote Staff-level individual contributor role for a privacy-focused open-source communication and productivity organisation used by millions of people globally. The position owns architecture and technical direction for new web-based service offerings that extend the platform beyond email into adjacent productivity experiences, working closely with designers, engineers, partner organisations, and a global open-source community.

Responsibilities

- Lead the technical architecture of new service products, taking ownership of complex projects and identifying improvements that strengthen systems as they evolve. - Write code, build prototypes and experiments, and contribute across the full development lifecycle from planning and testing through implementation, monitoring, and maintenance. - Establish software patterns and make technical decisions across the services portfolio, including evaluating and proposing technology choices. - Build and evolve analytics and infrastructure that help the team use user-generated data to inform decisions. - Take on ambiguous, high-level problems with broad scope and direct impact on growing users and subscribers. - Provide technical and product direction across internal teams and lead technical collaboration with partner organisations and community contributors. - Identify and plan improvements that make systems more accessible, self-serviceable, sustainable, scalable, and easier to delegate. - Mentor engineers through code review, documentation, technical discussions, and ongoing guidance.

Requirements

- 10+ years of web software development experience, including designing scalable and efficient systems and launching complex web projects at scale. - Expert-level JavaScript and knowledge of at least one additional programming language such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++. - Understanding of the business landscape, including challenges and opportunities, and experience collaborating to expand user and donor bases. - Experience with front-end frameworks, full-stack development, and/or API development. - Strong software development practices including testing, code review, and documentation, with the ability to help others develop these skills. - Experience acting as a technical lead, solving complex technical problems, and mentoring engineers. - Comfort working in an open-source environment with a commitment to user-privacy and open-web values. - Excellent written and verbal English communication for an internationally distributed team.
