Role overview Join a distributed team building privacy-respecting communication and productivity tools as a Staff Software Engineer focused on web-based Services products. In this staff-level individual contributor role, you will shape the technical architecture of offerings such as appointment calendars and secure file storage, taking a holistic view of systems as they evolve. The position combines hands-on coding with broad cross-team technical leadership in an open-source, fully remote environment.
Responsibilities - Lead the technical architecture for new Services products, owning complex projects end-to-end and identifying improvements that strengthen systems over time - Write code, build prototypes and experiments, and contribute across the full development lifecycle from planning and testing through monitoring and maintenance - Establish software patterns and make technical decisions across Services, including proposing and evaluating technology choices - Build and evolve analytics and infrastructure that turn user-generated data into actionable insights - Tackle ambiguous, high-level problems with broad scope and direct impact on subscriber and user growth - Provide technical and product direction across teams, collaborate with adjacent product groups and open-source contributors, and mentor engineers through reviews, documentation, and ongoing guidance
Requirements - 10+ years of web software development experience, including designing efficient architectures and launching complex web projects at scale - Expert-level JavaScript plus working knowledge of at least one additional language such as Python, Rust, Go, or C++ - Experience with front-end frameworks, full-stack development, and/or API development - Track record as a technical lead solving complex problems and mentoring other engineers - Strong software development practices including testing, code review, and documentation - Comfort working in an open-source environment with an international, geographically distributed team; excellent written and verbal English communication
Nice to have - Experience understanding business drivers and collaborating with teams to grow user and donor bases - Familiarity with responsibly using emerging AI-enabled development tools
