Manager, Software Engineering

Role overview

An engineering leadership role managing two teams that support a core Vehicle product: a Feature Delivery team and an Operational Excellence team focused on production support and system reliability. The position blends people management, technical product ownership, and occasional hands-on backend contribution within a Java/Spring ecosystem. The ideal candidate has built high-performing, self-organizing engineering teams and can shape technical strategy while driving engineer growth.

Responsibilities

- Lead, mentor, and develop engineers, fostering ownership, accountability, and collaboration. - Establish structure, practices, and timely incident response for the Operational Excellence team. - Define roadmaps and priorities for engineering-driven initiatives, aligning work with business value. - Drive planning, execution, and delivery with operational rigor across quality and documentation. - Use metrics to evaluate team, system, and project health and surface issues early. - Encourage adoption of AI tools and automation to improve development workflows. - Participate in technical design discussions, code reviews, and occasional backend development. - Recruit, onboard, and support the ongoing performance and professional development of team members.

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent work experience preferred. - 3+ years of management or technical leadership experience. - 5-9+ years developing server-side applications, ideally within the Java/Spring ecosystem. - Experience with Spring, Spring MVC, Hibernate, and JPA. - Strong foundation in object-oriented programming, design patterns, and domain-driven design. - Familiarity with React, AJAX, HTML5/CSS3, and modern JavaScript frameworks. - Experience leading fully remote or geographically distributed teams in a Scrum/Agile environment. - Proven ability to define and use metrics for reliability, team performance, and project health.

- Experience integrating AI-driven tools to enhance team productivity and software quality. - Comfort operating as a product-focused engineering lead in the absence of a dedicated product manager.
