Role overview A staff-level backend engineering role within a product engineering organisation of several hundred engineers. The work centres on building and supporting customer-facing services inside a squad that includes product, design, research, mobile, web, and data colleagues, while contributing to a wider collective of around 100 people. It suits someone who enjoys distributed systems work, writes resilient code in a strongly-typed language, and cares about real customer outcomes.
Responsibilities - Build and support backend services that power a particular part of the product alongside a cross-functional squad - Write resilient, well-typed code using Go and contribute to shared engineering practices - Design and operate distributed systems using Cassandra, Kafka, Envoy, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS - Collaborate directly with product managers, designers, researchers, and analysts to test hypotheses and ship changes - Contribute to knowledge-sharing across the engineering community, including open source work - Work across squads and collectives as needed, including areas where machine learning and AI play a major role - Mentor other engineers and help raise the technical bar
Requirements - Strong experience working on the backend of a technology product - A product mindset with care for customer outcomes and data-informed decision making - Comfort working in teams that handle ambiguity and shifting priorities - Genuine interest in distributed systems and resilient software design - Experience with one or more strongly-typed languages such as Go, Java, C, or Scala - Curiosity and the desire to learn new things quickly
