Senior Backend Engineer

Role overview

A senior backend engineering position focused on building and supporting an in-house banking platform used by customers every day. The role sits inside a cross-functional squad alongside product managers, designers, mobile and web engineers, user researchers, data analysts, and writers, contributing to one of several self-governing business units covering areas such as core banking, business banking, payments, wealth, borrowing, growth, platform, financial crime, and security. Some areas apply machine learning and AI, offering exposure to data-driven product work.

Responsibilities

- Design, build, and operate backend services that power customer-facing banking products - Collaborate daily with product, design, data, and engineering colleagues to ship well-scoped outcomes - Contribute to distributed systems, asynchronous messaging, and resilient service architecture - Work with cloud, container, and data infrastructure layers supporting a regulated production platform - Support and maintain specific product or platform areas end-to-end as part of a dedicated squad - Contribute to open source software where opportunities arise

Requirements

- Substantial experience working on the backend of a technology product - A product mindset with care for customer outcomes and willingness to make data-informed decisions - Comfort operating in teams that navigate ambiguity - Genuine interest in distributed systems and writing resilient software - Hands-on experience with at least one strongly-typed language such as Go, Java, C, or Scala - Enthusiasm for the work and openness to learning new technologies

Nice to have

- Prior exposure to Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, Envoy Proxy, AWS, or GCP (full onboarding support provided) - Background contributing to open source projects
