About this role

Role overview A digital banking organisation is hiring a senior backend engineer to help build and evolve its in-house banking platform. The engineering organisation spans roughly 650 people working across disciplines, tackling challenges that range from customer-facing products through to infrastructure, security, payments, financial crime, and data. The role suits someone who wants broad impact and is comfortable working across a regulated financial product, with flexible working options across the UK.

Responsibilities - Design and develop backend services that power everyday banking features - Collaborate with product, data, and platform teams to deliver end-to-end outcomes - Build resilient distributed systems using asynchronous messaging and event-driven patterns - Operate and evolve services running on container orchestration infrastructure - Make data-informed decisions that improve customer experience - Participate in technical discussions including system design, pairing, and code reviews

Requirements - Strong backend engineering experience on a production technology product - Comfort working in teams that navigate ambiguity and shifting priorities - Interest in distributed systems, resilience, and writing reliable software - Familiarity with a strongly-typed language such as Go, Java, C, or Scala - A product mindset focused on customer outcomes - Genuine enthusiasm for a product used daily by a large customer base

Nice to have - Hands-on exposure to Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, Envoy, AWS, or GCP - Experience building public web apps or internal tooling with React

Benefits and work setup - £85,000–£110,000 base salary plus performance-linked incentive awards - London headquarters with UK-remote flexibility and reimbursed travel for occasional in-person gatherings - Visa sponsorship and UK relocation support available - Flexible hours and part-time arrangements considered where feasible - £1,000 annual learning budget for books, training courses, and conferences - Structured interview process averaging around four weeks: an initial call, a take-home task or pair coding exercise, and a final round covering system design and behavioural fit
