Staff Backend Engineer

Role overview Staff Backend Engineer (L60) joining a large UK engineering organisation that builds and operates a full-stack banking platform. The role centres on collaborative, product-led engineering in Go, contributing to the services that power accounts, payments, and customer-facing tooling at significant scale.

Responsibilities - Build backend services in Go, working within a squad alongside product managers, designers, mobile, web, data, and research colleagues. - Design and evolve distributed systems using Cassandra, Kafka, Envoy Proxy, Kubernetes, Docker, and AWS. - Prototype, test, and ship changes that improve customer experience and operational reliability. - Participate in code review, architecture discussions, and engineering knowledge-sharing sessions. - Contribute to open-source work where appropriate and engage with the wider engineering community. - Collaborate with data centre and integration partners on third-party connectivity.

Requirements - Significant experience as a backend engineer building production systems in Go or a comparable language. - Depth in at least one of: distributed data stores, asynchronous messaging, microservices, or cloud infrastructure. - Comfort working across the stack with web, mobile, and data counterparts. - Strong sense of ownership for the systems you build, including reliability, performance, and operability. - Ability to communicate technical trade-offs clearly to varied audiences. - Interest in working on problems unique to banking, such as payments, ledgers, and compliance.

Nice to have - Experience with Cassandra, Kafka, Envoy, Kubernetes, or AWS in production. - Contributions to open-source projects. - Background in fintech, payments, or other regulated environments.

Benefits and work setup - Base salary £130,000–£170,000 plus equity and benefits. - Location options: Cardiff, London, or remote within the UK.
