About this role
Role overview
Join a UK-based digital bank as a Senior Backend Engineer, helping to build and evolve the in-house platform that powers personal, business, joint, youth, and kids accounts, plus credit cards, savings, investments, and pensions. With around 650 engineers collaborating across disciplines, the role sits within a cross-functional squad responsible for a specific part of the banking product, contributing to services that handle large volumes of customer interactions every day.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend services that power customer-facing banking features and the underlying platform. - Collaborate daily with product managers, designers, mobile and web engineers, data analysts, user researchers, and writers inside a single squad. - Contribute to areas such as core banking, business banking, wealth, borrowing, growth, payments, platform infrastructure, financial crime, and security. - Apply machine learning and AI techniques where relevant to detect fraud, personalise experiences, or improve operational workflows. - Participate in code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge sharing to keep the codebase healthy and the team growing. - Help operate services in production, including on-call support and continuous improvement of reliability and performance.
Requirements
- Significant professional experience as a backend engineer building production systems at scale. - Strong proficiency in a modern backend language, with willingness to learn and work in Go. - Comfort working with distributed systems, persistent data stores, asynchronous messaging, container orchestration, and cloud infrastructure. - Ability to collaborate across disciplines and contribute to product decisions, not just code. - A growth mindset and curiosity for learning new technologies; no formal degree requirement. - Right to work in the UK, or willingness to be sponsored or relocated with company support.
Nice to have
- Hands-on experience with Go, Cassandra, Kafka, Kubernetes, Docker, Envoy Proxy, AWS, or GCP. - Exposure to financial services, payments, regulatory environments, or applied machine learning. - Interest in open-source contributions and public technical writing.
Benefits and work setup
- Salary range of £105,000 to £135,000 plus performance-linked incentive awards. - London hub with flexibility to work remotely anywhere in the UK, supported by occasional in-person gatherings. - Visa sponsorship and relocation support available for qualifying candidates. - Flexible core hours with trust-based autonomy over daily schedule. - Annual learning budget of £1,000 for books, training courses, and conferences. - Additional perks including team lunches, wellness support, and family-friendly policies designed to support work-life balance.
