About this role
Role overview
This is a Backend Engineer III position at a UK-based digital bank that builds and operates its own in-house banking platform. The role joins a large engineering organisation working across products, infrastructure, security, payments, finance, customer operations, financial crime, and data, contributing to resilient distributed systems that power everyday banking experiences for millions of customers.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate backend services that power customer-facing products and internal tooling. - Apply a product mindset by caring about customer outcomes and making data-informed decisions. - Work through ambiguity as part of a collaborative team that solves cross-disciplinary problems. - Build distributed, resilient software and contribute to the evolution of the platform's architecture.
Requirements
- Strong experience working on the backend of a technology product. - Comfort working in teams that deal with ambiguity, with a willingness to build rather than wait. - Genuine interest in distributed systems and writing resilient software. - Some experience with strongly-typed languages such as Go, Java, C, or Scala. - A desire to be involved in building a product that the engineer and people they know use every day.
Nice to have
- Onboarding support is provided for the stack: Go for application code, Cassandra for persistent storage, Kafka for asynchronous messaging, Kubernetes and Docker for scheduling, Envoy Proxy for RPC, AWS for production infrastructure, GCP for data infrastructure, and React for web apps and internal tools.
Benefits and work setup
- Base salary of £85,000 to £110,000 plus incentive awards tied to performance. - Based in London or distributed anywhere in the UK, with ad hoc in-person meetings and travel cost support for trips to the London office. - Relocation and visa sponsorship support available. - Flexible working hours, a £1,000 annual learning budget, and strong home-working setup support.
