Role overview A Software Engineer II position on a Core Edge Processing group that owns transaction routing, authorization, and the cryptographic infrastructure underneath real-time payment processing. The role involves shipping production code on always-on payment systems alongside senior engineers in a flexible, remote-first environment within Ontario or British Columbia, Canada. It is well suited for engineers with a couple of years of professional experience who want to deepen distributed systems and payments expertise.
Responsibilities - Ship production code across the routing and processing stack with senior engineers available for collaboration. - Take ownership of well-scoped features and bug fixes end to end, from design discussion through production release. - Join the on-call rotation and contribute to incident response, building operational fluency on live payment systems. - Grow Java, distributed systems, and payments knowledge through hands-on project work. - Work closely with senior and staff engineers to steadily expand technical scope and impact.
Requirements - 2+ years of professional engineering experience, including deploying and operating mission-critical services on AWS. - Solid grasp of Java fundamentals with a real interest in going deeper. - Comfort debugging and troubleshooting production issues, supported by teammates. - Eagerness to learn distributed systems and the world of payment processing. - Strong communication skills, a habit of asking good questions, and openness to feedback.
Nice to have - Exposure to payment processing, card issuing, or card network integration concepts. - Familiarity with cryptography or key management concepts. - Prior on-call or production-support experience.
