Java Senior Software Engineer

Role overview Lead development on a highly scalable, geo-distributed database engine within a small, highly skilled engineering group. The work goes deep into replication, sharding, concurrency, and performance, with both on-premise and cloud deployment contexts and some leadership of other engineers.

Responsibilities - Ensure the scalability, performance, and reliability of the distributed database system. - Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and ship new features. - Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues across distributed environments. - Profile, debug, and tune performance using JVM tooling such as JFR, JMC, async-profiler, and VisualVM. - Design data structures and on-disk and network storage strategies, including failure handling and recovery. - Implement and integrate high-availability algorithms for cluster-wide resilience. - Investigate data consistency algorithm flaws, including low-level debugging across multi-node clusters.

Requirements - 4+ years of Java programming experience. - Deep knowledge of concurrency in Java, the Java Memory Model, and concurrency models more broadly. - Strong Java SE background including I/O and JVM internals. - Experience with SQL databases and troubleshooting Java applications or database systems. - Strong leadership, problem-solving, and debugging abilities. - Deep SQL knowledge (e.g., MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, Apache Ignite, GridGain) and passion for distributed systems concepts like Raft, MVCC, and ACID. - Understanding of MVCC and two-phase locking, plus the difference between Snapshot Isolation and REPEATABLE READ.

Nice to have - Experience with NoSQL or distributed databases and building high-load distributed systems. - Docker, Kubernetes, or public cloud experience (AWS, GCE, Azure). - Open-source contributions, automation expertise, or performance and load testing. - Active use of AI in engineering workflows.

Benefits and work setup - Hybrid or remote in Bulgaria; remote across several EU countries plus Armenia and Cyprus. - Listed salary band of EUR 74,200 – 100,400 gross annually. - 25 days paid annual leave plus holidays; remote or hybrid depending on location.
