Job details
About this role
Role overview Lead a distributed engineering team responsible for building and operating a direct-to-consumer commerce platform, spanning storefronts, checkout, middleware, integrations, and cloud infrastructure. This is a hands-on management role: you will guide delivery and team development while contributing code, overseeing production health, and shaping technical standards and platform plans with partners across the business.
Responsibilities - Set quarterly and annual priorities, coordinate launch schedules, and plan code freezes around high-volume trading periods. - Manage the development backlog, capacity, estimates, and change process in partnership with a project manager. - Establish engineering practices for reviews, testing, secure development, CI/CD, and documentation; review high-risk changes and resolve technical issues. - Spend roughly 20–30% of your time building features, addressing production defects, and implementing integrations for new software. - Monitor service health and delivery metrics, coordinate incident response, and drive operational alerts to resolution. - Manage vendor relationships and spend, contribute to architecture and roadmap decisions, and partner with product, marketing, security, and other teams.
Requirements - At least 8 years building and operating full-stack customer-facing commerce or web platforms, including 2 or more years leading onshore and offshore developers while remaining hands-on. - Experience with Node.js and TypeScript services, REST or GraphQL APIs, SQL and relational databases, and event-driven integrations. - Frontend experience with React and Next.js or a comparable framework, including storefront performance and SEO. - Production cloud experience on GCP or Azure, including infrastructure as code, CI/CD, observability, identity and secrets, and cost management. - Shopify Plus experience with its APIs, checkout extensions, apps, webhooks, and multi-market configurations. - Background managing contractors or consulting teams, defining review practices, and owning production incidents and availability through peak periods.
Nice to have - Experience with headless CMS platforms, subscription services, consent or analytics tools, storefront migrations, or cloud migrations.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first arrangement with a monthly utility allowance. - Medical, dental, vision, life, disability, and retirement benefits, including an employer 401(k) match; paid sick leave, mental health days, holidays, and parental leave are also offered. - Listed base compensation range: $180,000–$190,000 USD.
