Role overview An Engineering Manager role leading a team of software engineers building end-to-end software for first responder agencies. The position blends hands-on technical leadership with people management, delivery planning, and cross-functional collaboration to ship customer-focused, reliable solutions. It suits a seasoned engineering leader who can balance technical direction, team development, and business priorities while fostering accountability and continuous improvement.
Responsibilities - Lead, mentor, and develop a team of engineers through coaching, performance management, career development, and regular feedback. - Partner closely with Product, Design, QA, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software aligned with business objectives. - Provide technical leadership on architecture, system design, scalability, security, and engineering best practices. - Drive planning, estimation, prioritization, and execution across the full product development lifecycle. - Apply AI-augmented software development practices to advance department SDLC goals. - Establish and maintain engineering standards, code review practices, testing strategies, and operational procedures. - Monitor team health, velocity, and product performance and remove obstacles to delivery. - Lead hiring, workforce planning, and onboarding to scale high-performing teams. - Serve as an escalation point for production incidents and coordinate response, root cause analysis, and resolution. - Contribute to long-term technology strategy and roadmap planning.
Requirements - 8+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3 years in engineering management, team lead, or technical leadership. - Proven track record leading engineering teams through delivery of complex software products. - Strong background in software architecture, system design, and modern development practices. - Experience managing engineers through hiring, performance reviews, coaching, and career development. - Ability to partner with Product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable technical plans. - Demonstrated success leading cross-functional teams and influencing decisions across stakeholders. - Experience supporting production environments, incident management, and operational excellence. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences. - Demonstrated ability to build team culture, drive accountability, and develop high-performing engineering teams.
Nice to have - Experience leading distributed or remote engineering teams. - Background with cloud-based SaaS platforms and modern software development methodologies.
