Remote job
Engineering Manager
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Manage an engineering pod of approximately six to eight engineers and own its health, delivery, operating rhythm, and development. You will work in close partnership with a technical lead on architecture and quality and with a product manager on priorities and product value. The role is hands-on enough to remain connected to production engineering while focusing primarily on people leadership, execution, accountability, and continuous improvement in a complex financial-services domain.
Responsibilities
- Establish clear priorities, ownership, expectations, planning practices, retrospectives, and follow-through for the pod. - Remove blockers, identify stalled or poorly scoped work, surface delivery risks early, and keep engineers focused on high-leverage problems. - Hold regular one-to-ones, provide direct and constructive feedback, support growth, and address sustained performance gaps fairly. - Partner with product and technical leaders on tradeoffs, roadmap execution, architecture discussions, and technical quality without acting as the sole decision-maker. - Improve hiring, onboarding, team autonomy, operational reliability, incident response, postmortems, and reduction of engineering toil. - Stay close enough to the codebase and production systems to evaluate plans, estimates, designs, security risks, and delivery health.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience directly managing engineers, ideally across a product or platform team. - A credible engineering background with experience shipping production software and reviewing pull requests or design documents. - Evidence of improving a team’s ability to deliver predictably and operate with greater clarity and autonomy. - Strong written communication for reviews, escalations, planning, and remote collaboration. - Ability to give difficult feedback clearly and respectfully while maintaining accountability and psychological safety. - Comfort working through ambiguity, high-complexity workflows, operational risk, sensitive data, and cross-functional product decisions.
Nice to have
- Experience with AI-assisted software development, evaluation workflows, experiment design, or dataset curation. - Familiarity with SLOs, incident management, postmortems, security practices, and reliability operations. - Experience hiring and onboarding engineers in a growing organization.
Benefits and work setup
- Remote-first working environment with flexible time off. - Medical coverage with employee and family premiums covered, plus vision, dental, 401(k), HSA/FSA, and access to an employee loan program.
