Role overview

Voice AI Engineer focused on building conversational agents that handle real patient phone calls for medical clinics, including scheduling, referral confirmation, insurance verification, and care gap outreach. The role centers on shipping production voice agents integrated with electronic health record systems, serving healthcare providers across the United States including federally qualified health centers.

Responsibilities

- Design, build, and ship voice agents on an enterprise conversational AI platform, covering both single-agent and multi-step workflow architectures - Develop conversational logic including state machines, turn-taking, interruption and barge-in handling, and confirmation flows before any action writes to the patient record - Engineer prompts tuned for voice, optimizing latency, accuracy, and natural pacing in both English and Spanish - Wire agents to backend tools in Python and FastAPI that read and write patient data, appointments, and referrals in the EHR - Implement telephony over PSTN and SIP, handling real-world call conditions such as background noise, varied accents, extended silence, and wrong numbers - Manage voice agent configuration as versioned Infrastructure as Code, ensuring deployments are reproducible rather than assembled through a web interface - Design escalation paths, quiet-hours rules, and safe handling patterns for protected health information

Requirements

- Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and operate independently after a single walkthrough of a new workflow - Hands-on experience building and shipping production voice agents or conversational AI systems - Proficiency in Python and FastAPI for backend service development - Familiarity with telephony infrastructure including Twilio, PSTN, and SIP - Experience with prompt engineering for voice, balancing latency, accuracy, and conversational quality - Bilingual fluency in English and Spanish - Understanding of healthcare data handling and HIPAA-compliant development practices

- Experience treating agent configuration as code with version control and automated deployment - Prior work integrating with electronic health record systems - Background in healthcare technology, patient engagement, or clinical workflows
