Remote job
Staff Engineer - Growth - Verifications
Job details
About this role
Role overview A senior staff engineering role focused on the identity verification pipeline for a professional trading platform. The position sets the technical direction for KYC and KYB flows, balancing regulator-grade auditability with the latency expectations of institutional and active trader customers. It is a hands-on leadership seat on a relatively new team, where the engineer shapes architecture, patterns, and build-versus-buy decisions rather than inheriting an established stack.
Responsibilities - Define the architecture and service contracts for verification flows across the customer journey, including how KYC and KYB providers are abstracted behind a stable layer. - Engineer fail-closed behavior and tamper-evident audit trails that withstand regulatory and compliance review. - Identify recurring classes of failures in onboarding and eliminate them at the design level rather than patching incidents one at a time. - Author and drive architecture decision records, embedding security and compliance considerations from design time onward. - Mentor senior engineers through design reviews, code feedback, and patterns that raise overall team throughput. - Measure success on speed of verification, rate of automated decisioning, decision accuracy, system uptime, and team growth.
Requirements - Roughly eight years building and operating production systems, with a track record of owning a domain's technical direction end to end. - Deep, fluent expertise in Rust, plus the versatility to work in TypeScript and React where the verification flow meets the customer. - Demonstrated history of setting architecture others have built on, with concrete examples of failure classes designed out. - Experience in environments where being wrong has real consequences, such as compliance, payments, or security. - Strong grounding in distributed systems, service contracts, and secure design, including integration of untrusted third-party APIs with timeouts, retries, idempotency, circuit breakers, and tested backup paths. - Working knowledge of, or ability to ramp quickly on, gRPC, Temporal, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, MySQL or MariaDB, Redis, and GitLab CI.
Nice to have - Direct experience with KYC, KYB, or fraud workflows, including integrations with providers such as Trulioo, Persona, or ComplyAdvantage. - Comfort building products that incorporate AI into the decisioning loop. - Background in cryptocurrency, fintech, or another heavily regulated sector.
