Remote job
Senior Software Engineer, Scientific Computing (Hardware/Sensors)
Job details
About this role
Role overview
Build the software foundations that help scientific and geoscience teams turn varied exploration data into repeatable analyses and useful machine-learning workflows. The work spans research tooling and production systems, including integrating unfamiliar software and data formats, improving experimental iteration, and supporting decisions with data from physical instruments and field settings.
Responsibilities
- Design and maintain shared scientific computing libraries for exploration analysis. - Connect third-party and specialized tools into reliable, repeatable data pipelines, including handling undocumented formats and software boundaries. - Create notebook and experimentation tools, evaluation and simulation frameworks, and scalable paths from research prototypes to production ML pipelines. - Organize models and their outputs so results can be reproduced and discovered by the wider team. - Diagnose issues across binaries, instrumentation, external code, and deployed systems. - Collaborate with data scientists, geoscientists, and engineers; promote robust, testable, composable software practices.
Requirements
- At least five years of experience in software engineering, data science, or machine learning engineering; strong candidates may have more. - A track record of delivering production-quality data-processing systems or tools with practical value. - Proficiency in Python and core machine-learning concepts, including statistical, traditional, and deep-learning methods. - Experience working with physical-world data such as measurements, scientific instruments, imagery, or geophysical observations. - Ability to visualize scientific data for domain experts and to work with limited, noisy, or disparate data sources. - Strong ownership, communication, and prioritization skills, including the ability to explain technical issues to non-software specialists.
Nice to have
Experience with array-oriented Python tools such as NumPy or xarray; hardware, laboratory, flight, space, or field-deployed systems; and coaching others in engineering practices. Interest in geology and mineral exploration is valuable. Occasional travel to exploration sites is expected, approximately twice a year depending on project needs.
Benefits and work setup
This is a full-time remote role for candidates located in the United States or Canada who are legally authorized to work there. The stated US base salary range is $170,000–$215,000.
