Staff Data Engineer

Role overview Join the Data Platform team as a Staff Data Engineer shaping the next generation of data integration for a SaaS product used by tens of thousands of small service businesses. This is a highly strategic and hands-on role combining architecture, technical leadership, design, and coding, with responsibility for scalable batch and real-time pipelines, governance, and team enablement. The position serves as a technical champion and force multiplier, partnering across the organization so data remains a trusted asset that accelerates business growth.

Responsibilities - Design, build, and maintain scalable batch and real-time data pipelines while anticipating future needs across systems. - Champion technical excellence by setting best practices, raising engineering quality, and mentoring engineers at all levels. - Drive reliability and resilience through testing standards, SLAs (uptime, RTO, RPO), and disaster recovery playbooks. - Advance observability, governance, and data integrity through frameworks for monitoring, logging, lineage, and auditing. - Empower the broader organization to self-serve data confidently through tooling, documentation, and architectural guidance. - Dedicate time to work acceleration, cross-team initiatives, emerging-technology exploration, paying down technical debt, and growing engineering practice.

Requirements - Demonstrated success guiding teams through complex, high-impact projects with strong architectural direction and hands-on coding. - Exceptional proficiency in software design, system architecture, and coding with a focus on long-term maintainability, performance, and resilience. - Strong background in infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or CloudFormation), observability (logging, monitoring, tracing), and system reliability. - Deep hands-on experience with modern data tools and cloud-based data platforms, including CDC and streaming patterns. - Exceptional communication, self-motivation, and resourcefulness, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and prioritize in fast-paced environments.

Nice to have - Exposure to ML platforms and distributed compute frameworks such as Ray, TensorFlow, or PyTorch, and experience operationalizing models with drift detection. - Hands-on exposure to non-data codebases like Ruby on Rails or TypeScript/React. - Familiarity with GraphQL, API layer design, and performance optimization. - Prior work on developer tooling or shared platforms supporting multiple engineering domains. - Knowledge of data privacy, security, and compliance considerations in cloud-based data environments.
