About this role
Role overview Build the retrieval and data layer behind a legal AI platform that handles complex legal work end to end. As a senior engineer, you will design and ship distributed, AI-powered systems that help lawyers and legal teams draft, research, and analyze matters with high accuracy and confidentiality.
Responsibilities - Design and operate retrieval-augmented generation systems, including vector databases, embeddings, and semantic search, balancing precision against infrastructure cost. - Build and scale distributed services with background job queues and asynchronous processing pipelines that handle large, document-heavy workloads. - Develop and maintain AI-driven features that support legal drafting, analysis, and research workflows for practicing attorneys and in-house teams. - Make, document, and defend architectural decisions during technical review, weighing trade-offs between speed, recall, and operational complexity. - Partner across engineering, product, and customer-facing teams to translate legal domain needs into reliable platform capabilities.
Requirements - Senior-level engineering experience building production AI systems that combine language models with retrieval components. - Deep familiarity with vector databases, semantic search, and the trade-offs between different retrieval approaches. - Experience designing and operating distributed systems at scale, including background job queues and async processing pipelines. - Track record of making and documenting architectural decisions that hold up under technical review.
Nice to have - Experience in legal technology, legal data providers, or regulated industries with strict data handling requirements. - Familiarity with legal citation systems, court document formats, and the structure of legal authority hierarchies. - Prior work fine-tuning or evaluating domain-specific language models. - Experience at an early-stage startup where you helped shape engineering culture from the ground up.
