Senior Scientist, Quantum Applications
Job details
About this role
Role overview
A senior research role focused on designing end-to-end quantum applications that translate advances in quantum hardware into scientific and commercial outcomes. The position sits on a cross-functional team that builds novel algorithms for trapped-ion quantum systems and applies them to problems in computational chemistry, optimization, and machine learning. It blends hands-on algorithm development, partner collaboration, peer-reviewed publication, and contribution to a flagship scientific discovery initiative.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and optimize novel quantum algorithms and end-to-end workflows targeting real-world impact in computational chemistry, optimization, and machine learning - Collaborate with external customers and partners to scope problems of practical interest and deliver solutions on trapped-ion quantum hardware - Benchmark algorithmic performance rigorously and publish findings in high-impact peer-reviewed journals and conferences - Support a major scientific discovery initiative and help shape the team's research culture - Translate deeply technical ideas for audiences ranging from scientists and engineers to business leaders and community stakeholders
Requirements
- 6+ years of professional experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience - Strong proficiency in Python and/or C++ plus hands-on experience with Qiskit or comparable quantum SDKs - Demonstrated expertise developing or optimizing quantum algorithms in computational chemistry, optimization, or machine learning - Track record of innovative quantum work shown through peer-reviewed publications, invited talks, open-source repositories, or patents - Solid grounding in core quantum computing concepts with clear technical communication skills - Experience collaborating on teams that define and solve real-world problems
Nice to have
- Ph.D. in computer science, mathematics, engineering, physics, or a closely related field - Background contributing to customer- or partner-facing technical engagements from problem definition through delivery - Familiarity with variational quantum algorithms and hybrid quantum-classical workloads spanning CPUs, GPUs, and QPUs - Experience developing hybrid algorithms for both NISQ-era systems and early fault-tolerant quantum computers - Exposure to quantum resource estimation, performance benchmarking, and scaling analysis
Benefits and work setup
- Remote position based in the United States - Approximately 10% domestic and international travel for customer engagements and conference participation - Approximate base salary range of $145,920 to $191,047 - Employer is an Equal Employment Opportunity employer; some technical roles require confirmation of U.S. person status under export control regulations
