Senior Software Engineer II, AI Labs & Foundations

Role overview Build and operate production AI systems for customer-facing shopping experiences, including conversational and voice interactions. The role combines strong software engineering with applied machine learning, taking promising ideas from prototype into reliable services used at substantial scale. You’ll partner with product, design, data science, and infrastructure teams and contribute to foundational systems for future AI features.

Responsibilities - Design, implement, and operate AI-powered services and agentic experiences. - Develop foundations such as embedding infrastructure, voice pipelines, client-facing components, and integrations. - Integrate foundation models through APIs or open-source frameworks, using retrieval and vector search where appropriate. - Own delivery end to end, including requirements, system design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and ongoing optimization. - Improve reliability, latency, and cost while maintaining strong engineering practices through design reviews, code reviews, and shared standards. - Work across disciplines to prototype, evaluate, and launch AI product capabilities.

Requirements - Senior-level experience building and operating production systems at scale, including making architectural decisions and working through ambiguity. - Shipped AI or machine-learning features in production, such as LLM-powered product functionality or foundation model integrations. - Experience owning services across CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and on-call support. - Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills. - Experience with Go, Python, or TypeScript, and willingness to use AI-assisted development tools.

Nice to have - Five or more years of industry experience and a record of taking new concepts from prototype to production. - Conversational agents, multi-turn dialogue, speech technologies, model training or fine-tuning, or model performance measurement. - Embeddings, vector search, or retrieval-augmented generation; cloud infrastructure, containers, Kubernetes, or event-driven systems. - Mentoring and technical leadership across teams.
