About this role
Role overview This position contributes to the Linux kernel across a wide range of subsystems, from graphics and scheduling to filesystems, memory management, and CPU architecture support. The role is embedded in open-source kernel communities and centers on upstream-style collaboration via mailing lists, bug trackers, and patch series. It suits self-directed engineers who enjoy tackling hard, low-level problems on their own while staying engaged with a remote, distributed team.
Responsibilities - Develop and maintain features and bug fixes across multiple Linux kernel subsystems. - Work on areas such as DRM/graphics, schedulers, the block layer, filesystems, and memory management. - Contribute architecture-specific work for x86, ARM, and RISC-V platforms. - Communicate clearly on public mailing lists and submit well-documented, detailed patches. - Engage with kernel community processes, including code review and consensus building.
Requirements - Hands-on experience with the Linux kernel in at least one subsystem. - Prior contributions to upstream kernel work or active engagement with mailing lists and bug trackers. - Strong written English and a commitment to open, transparent communication. - Comfort working independently on complex technical topics. - Appreciation for free and open-source software culture.
Nice to have - Experience spanning both feature development and bug fixing in the kernel. - Familiarity with multiple subsystems or architecture ports.
Benefits and work setup - Fully remote work from anywhere. - Co-working or home-office budget to set up a suitable workspace. - Recurring hardware budget for work-related equipment. - 8 weeks of paid parental leave for new parents. - Annual company-wide in-person retreats. - Self-designed work schedule and generous paid time off.
