Role overview This role places an experienced server engineer inside a small game team, where backend work directly shapes live player experience. The position focuses on designing and operating highly available, scalable services for live games while contributing to design decisions. It is a remote, part-time opportunity suited to someone who thrives on ownership and can stay calm under pressure.
Responsibilities - Design, build, deploy, and maintain scalable, highly available backends powering live games - Shape best practices for reliability and uptime across multiple production environments - Troubleshoot and tune high-volume shared database systems to keep latency and incidents in check - Participate in a rotating on-call rotation, providing round-the-clock first-line support during assigned shifts - Join game design discussions and contribute engineering perspective to feature direction
Requirements - At least five years of server-side Java experience covering POJOs, concurrency, and distributed systems - Solid Linux shell and scripting skills for day-to-day operations - Practical experience in database design and implementation, including confident SQL usage - Demonstrated ability to stay clear-headed and resolve a wide range of production issues under pressure - A self-driven, energetic attitude with a humble, respectful approach to collaborating with peers
Nice to have - Familiarity with network protocols and non-blocking IO - Exposure to cloud computing platforms - Hands-on experience with high-throughput live systems, or a strong conceptual grasp of the challenges they introduce - Background in server development without relying on traditional application servers
