Staff Backend Engineer - Promos
Job details
About this role
Role overview Set backend technical direction for a product domain focused on promotions, while staying hands-on with complex engineering work. The role spans architecture, delivery, and production operations across a shared cloud and services environment, with staff-level influence that includes aligning teams, mentoring engineers, and improving engineering practices.
Responsibilities - Define domain architecture and align it with shared platform, cloud, data, and service standards; coordinate with teams responsible for capabilities such as identity, payments, messaging, and compliance. - Guide modernization and technical investment, weighing product delivery, technical debt, scalability, and measurable outcomes. - Design promotion services for configuration, eligibility, activation, rewards, expiration, audit trails, idempotency, and recovery. - Agree on service boundaries, API and event contracts, experiments, success measures, and operational controls with product and delivery partners. - Build resilient systems for high traffic using suitable consistency, caching, asynchronous processing, rate controls, and graceful degradation. - Lead iterative delivery of major changes, strengthen code and operational standards, diagnose production issues across services and data infrastructure, and mentor engineers.
Requirements - Typically seven or more years in software engineering, including substantial design and operational experience with distributed backend systems; a relevant degree or equivalent experience. - Deep Java, Spring, and Spring Boot expertise, with examples of patterns adopted across teams. - Strong AWS experience building resilient, scalable applications across regions and availability zones. - Expertise with relational databases such as PostgreSQL or CockroachDB, including schema design, transactions, migrations, indexing, and performance. - Experience with streaming and messaging technologies such as Kafka or Kinesis and SQS, RabbitMQ, or ActiveMQ. - Background in microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, and high-volume system concerns such as concurrency, caching, idempotency, failure recovery, and compatible API evolution.
Benefits and work setup The source describes competitive compensation and benefits, flexible vacation, and the option to work from home or an office with flexible hours. It also cites the opportunity to build products for a large customer base; no specific salary or location is stated.
