About this role
Role overview A Director of Data Engineering is needed to own and modernize the central data platform that powers board reporting, retail analytics, and marketing decisions across a fast-growing consumer nutrition business. This is a hands-on leadership role focused on building an enterprise-grade foundation: cleaner models, less technical debt, and numbers that every team can trust.
Responsibilities - Set the data roadmap and own the company-wide data model, establishing a single source of truth for core business entities - Refactor legacy pipelines and reduce tech debt so the platform keeps pace with business growth - Strengthen pipeline resilience so data stays accurate, available, and trusted by stakeholders across the company - Manage warehouse and infrastructure spend as data volumes scale - Operate an intake and sprint cadence, prioritizing requests by business impact and adapting as priorities shift - Lead, coach, and develop a small engineering team through code reviews, feedback, and clear growth paths, stepping in hands-on when needed - Integrate new enterprise systems, including ERP, into the warehouse - Embed AI-native practices, using agents across development, incident investigation, and data quality work
Requirements - 8+ years in data architecture or data engineering, including 3+ years leading teams - Hands-on experience building and scaling cloud data platforms such as BigQuery or comparable systems - Strong SQL and Python skills, plus fluency in dbt or an equivalent transformation framework - Deep data modeling expertise that starts from business concepts before tables - Track record building data quality, governance, and monitoring practices that teams actually rely on - Experience running sprint-based intake and prioritization for a team serving many stakeholders - Familiarity with ELT tools such as Fivetran and Orbitrail, plus comfort working with enterprise systems
Nice to have - Background in DTC or CPG industries - Prior ERP integration experience
