About this role
Role overview
A reader-supported news comparison platform is hiring a senior backend engineer to help build the core systems that power a fast-growing consumer product used by millions. The role sits within the backend team and partners closely with the broader engineering organization to design, ship, and operate services that deliver a more transparent way to consume news across mobile, web, and browser extension clients.
Responsibilities
- Take rapid ownership of customer-facing features, with new work typically going live shortly after starting - Lead projects end to end, from concept and design through implementation, launch, and iteration - Operate in a lean, agile-influenced environment that adapts practices to fit the team and problem rather than following any single framework rigidly - Collaborate across product, design, and other departments, translating non-technical needs into implementable engineering solutions - Improve observability, reliability, and performance of backend services at the platform level - Plan and execute safe rollouts, monitoring stability and mitigating risk during and after deployment
Requirements
- At least five years of hands-on TypeScript experience, including modern Async/Await patterns - At least three years building production systems with Node.js - At least three years working with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL - Demonstrated ability to write efficient, scalable code and recognize anti-patterns to avoid - Track record of operating and scaling reliable services for a successful consumer product - Experience safely planning rollouts, monitoring stability, and mitigating risk during releases
Nice to have
- Some exposure to ElasticSearch, Redis, Valkey, or comparable caching and search systems - Strong critical-thinking skills and a clear desire to keep growing as a developer
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote position with a small, high-impact engineering team - Culture centered on collaboration, creativity, and diverse perspectives - Reader-supported, subscription-based business model without third-party advertising pressure - Mission-driven environment focused on media literacy, accountability, and civil discourse
