Role overview A freelance security researcher engagement focused on vulnerability research, detection engineering, and security automation for an open-source vulnerability management platform. The work supports organizations that need to proactively identify risks in their digital infrastructure. This opportunity is exclusively for independent freelancers and self-employed security professionals; agencies, consultancies, staffing firms, and other intermediaries cannot be considered.
Responsibilities - Research and develop code toward complex, security-related objectives - Independently analyze vulnerabilities and build systems that automate their detection - Design and implement technologies for future vulnerability analysis and the discovery of new attack vectors - Re-implement publicly available exploits in alternative programming languages - Develop detection and testing methods using techniques such as banner grabbing, authenticated protocols, and targeted product testing - Work confidently across a diverse range of security tools, operating systems, Git workflows, and network protocols
Requirements - Several years of hands-on cybersecurity experience spanning multiple roles, projects, or research activities - Strong coding skills in scripting or compiled languages, with software development as a central part of daily work - Genuine passion for vulnerability analysis, security research, and keeping pace with emerging threats and attack techniques - Excellent written English communication - Independent, structured, and proactive working style with the ability to quickly understand and improve existing codebases - Self-employed status and willingness to share hourly rate, maximum weekly availability, and earliest possible start date when applying
