About this role
Role overview
A fully remote role is open for a Staff Backend Engineer to join a platform team focused on the query path of a multi-tenant, cloud-hosted observability database serving metrics workloads at hyperscale. The position partners with ingest and storage sub-teams to evolve an open-source metrics system, contributing to both the managed cloud product and the underlying OSS project. The work centers on performance-sensitive distributed systems implemented in Go and running on Kubernetes across major cloud providers.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, operate, and maintain services on the query path of a distributed metrics database, owning reliability, performance, and availability targets - Drive projects from initial concept through production rollout, often partnering with another engineer on larger initiatives - Write and review pull requests and design documents contributed by teammates across the squad - Shepherd automated release rollouts and participate in follow-the-sun on-call rotations for the systems you support - Fold efficiency and resilience improvements discovered through production operations back into the codebase - Engage with adjacent open-source projects and contribute to initiatives beyond the team's immediate scope
Requirements
- Substantial professional experience building and operating distributed systems in Go - Background running multi-tenant services on Kubernetes, ideally across more than one major cloud provider - Hands-on work with high-volume telemetry or large-scale data systems - Ability to lead projects end-to-end and influence technical roadmap decisions - Comfort participating in on-call rotations and taking ownership of production services in operation
Nice to have
- Familiarity with open-source observability tooling such as Prometheus and related query layers - Prior contributions to open-source communities
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote work arrangement with team members distributed globally - Annual leave entitlement of 30 days, including three reserved company-wide shutdown days - In-person onboarding program designed to help new hires ramp up - Transparent culture with defined career growth pathways, autonomy-driven team structure, and an open-source-rooted operating style
