Senior OpenStack DevOps Engineer

Role overview A senior OpenStack engineering role responsible for architecting, implementing, and supporting a community-driven OpenStack-based private cloud. The work spans deep customization of core OpenStack projects, Infrastructure-as-Code automation, GitOps pipelines, and upstream contribution, supporting secure, performant, multi-tenant services for mission-critical applications.

Responsibilities - Design and implement multi-tenant OpenStack infrastructure aligned with open community standards, including network isolation and tenant-aware resource scheduling. - Automate provisioning, lifecycle management, and configuration of OpenStack services using Ansible, Terraform, or Pulumi. - Extend and maintain integrations across core OpenStack projects: Neutron (plugins, L2/L3 routing, BGP, DHCP, VLAN/VXLAN/Geneve), Octavia (HA load balancing, TLS offload), Manila (NFS/CIFS shares, tenant access), Cinder (block storage, snapshots, multi-attach), Nova (NUMA pinning, SR-IOV, PCI passthrough), Ironic (bare metal provisioning, IPMI, PXE/UEFI), and Glance (image lifecycle). - Contribute to upstream OpenStack projects through bug fixes, driver enhancements, and documentation. - Build continuous delivery pipelines for OpenStack updates including patching, upgrade testing, and rollback. - Develop automated monitoring, alerting, and self-healing using GitOps and observability stacks like Prometheus, Loki, and Grafana. - Harden services for high availability, disaster recovery, and scale-out, and perform deep troubleshooting across control and data planes. - Take part in on-call rotation, incident response, and root cause analysis.

Requirements - Five or more years operating and automating large-scale OpenStack environments, ideally in community-driven or upstream-contributing teams. - Expert-level Infrastructure-as-Code proficiency with Ansible, Terraform, or Pulumi. - Strong hands-on knowledge of Neutron, Octavia, Manila, Cinder, Nova, Ironic, and Glance. - Solid Linux (RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu) systems engineering with advanced scripting in Python, Bash, or Go. - Fluency with Git, CI/CD pipelines, and automated test frameworks. - Strong grasp of L2/L3 networking, SDN overlays (VXLAN, Geneve), load balancing, and SDS protocols (iSCSI, NFS, Ceph). - Track record building or maintaining multi-region or high-availability OpenStack clusters. - Ability to produce thorough technical documentation and contribute to internal wikis.

Nice to have - Direct contributions to upstream OpenStack codebases or participation in SIGs and working groups. - Familiarity with RBAC, Keystone federation, Barbican secrets management, and Ceilometer, Gnocchi, or Aodh telemetry. - Understanding of tenant isolation, microsegmentation, and compliance frameworks such as CIS or NIST. - Background in telco, edge cloud, or large enterprise infrastructure. - Experience with automated test harnesses like Tempest or Rally for OpenStack validation. - Bachelor's degree in computer science, IT, engineering, or related field, or equivalent experience plus relevant certifications.
