Remote job
Senior Backend Engineer, Core APIs (SRE Focus)
Job details
About this role
Role overview Join a distributed engineering team building the real-time backend systems that power large-scale online fraud detection. This is a hybrid backend and SRE role focused on designing high-throughput APIs, owning their reliability in production, and scaling capacity safely as demand grows.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and optimize backend services for real-time data processing and web APIs, treating reliability, latency, and cost as first-class concerns. - Define SLIs and SLOs for Core API services, and use error budgets to balance shipping velocity with stability. - Build and maintain observability tooling: meaningful metrics, structured logging, distributed tracing, and alerts that fire on user-visible symptoms. - Participate in an on-call rotation, lead incident response, and run blameless postmortems that drive concrete follow-up. - Conduct capacity planning, load testing, and performance tuning to keep the platform ahead of demand. - Automate recurring operational work and partner across teams to integrate services without regressing performance.
Requirements
- 5+ years of backend development experience, including meaningful time operating what you built in production. - Hands-on SRE practice: error budgets, capacity models, production readiness reviews, and chaos or fault-injection testing. - Strong experience with Go and Node.js for backend services at scale. - Experience designing APIs, real-time data processing, and microservices architectures. - Operational experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation. - Working fluency with observability platforms (e.g., Datadog) and SQL-based datastores such as DynamoDB, Redis, or Elasticsearch.
Nice to have
- Comfort mentoring other engineers and collaborating asynchronously across a globally distributed team. - Familiarity with analytics tooling such as ClickHouse and dbt, and a strong grasp of internet security and privacy mechanisms.
Benefits and work setup
- Fully remote, globally distributed team; candidates must be authorized to work from their home location. - Pay transparency with US-based salary ranges reflecting geographic breadth, including benchmarks for locations such as NYC and Chicago. - Visa sponsorship is not offered for this remote role. - Inclusive hiring practices with active encouragement of applicants from underrepresented groups in tech.
