About this role
Role overview Build and maintain the WordPress and PHP backbone of a digital media network spanning city-focused outlets that recommend things to do, great places and breaking news to tens of millions of readers every week. You will own production-grade code across multiple high-traffic WordPress sites, working with Symfony, PHP and MySQL while collaborating closely with editors, stakeholders and fellow engineers. The role combines hands-on theme and plugin work with architectural thinking, performance tuning and mentorship.
Responsibilities - Create and modify custom WordPress plugins and themes, including building them from scratch when needed. - Ship production-grade PHP code capable of handling high traffic levels, with attention to functionality and product enhancement. - Manage and evolve several WordPress installations, including handling cross-browser compatibility issues. - Work closely with internal stakeholders to define and prioritise product development. - Take ownership of system components, analyse user interactions and evolve the platform to meet their needs. - Mentor teammates through code reviews, architecture design sessions and pair programming.
Requirements - Deep knowledge of WordPress, PHP and the Symfony framework. - Solid experience creating and modifying WordPress plugins and themes, plus handling multiple WordPress sites. - Strong MySQL experience and comfort working with systems-level concerns such as caching and load balancers. - Self-starter mindset: highly productive, self-motivated and comfortable in a fast-paced environment. - Compliance with defined coding standards, business-level English and familiarity with collaborative planning rituals.
Nice to have - Ability to build WP plugins and themes from scratch. - Familiarity with JIRA for issue tracking.
