About this role
Role overview Own the direction and health of backend web services that support customer workflows for discovering, sharing, and using geospatial information. This senior, product-focused role combines API expertise with customer judgment: you’ll set priorities, guide service improvements, and help keep services dependable as the wider platform evolves.
Responsibilities - Guide assigned services from backlog planning through delivery, defect resolution, reliability work, and longer-term technical investment. - Set service goals and quality measures, using operational data and customer feedback to make prioritization decisions. - Manage tradeoffs among new capabilities, defects, technical debt, and ongoing operational needs. - Define API contracts, behavior, versioning, and compatibility, considering the effects of changes on connected products. - Promote reliability, performance, scalability, and observability, and work with support teams to assess and triage requests. - Coordinate across teams, contribute to shared practices, and mentor colleagues to shape service direction.
Requirements - At least five years in a product-oriented role such as product engineering, technical product ownership, or product management. - Experience in Agile software development and a strong grasp of web services, REST APIs, service contracts, versioning, and backward compatibility. - Familiarity with geospatial applications and services, such as GIS web platforms, REST APIs, Python APIs, or mapping SDKs. - Working knowledge of cloud service operations, including availability, performance, monitoring, and reliability. - Strong written and spoken communication, with the ability to explain technical decisions to varied audiences. - Ability to work independently and collaboratively; a bachelor’s degree in computer science, GIS, information science, or a related field.
Nice to have - Experience with enterprise-scale or developer-focused products, CI/CD, and modern DevOps practices. - Ability to read and reason about Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, or SQL; hands-on coding is not required.
