Role overview
Join an Analytics Engineering team as an Energy Data Scientist focused on advancing measurement and verification for distributed energy resources. The work centers on improving models that evaluate control algorithms across large fleets of smart thermostats, electric vehicles, batteries, and similar IoT devices contributing to a cleaner, more distributed electric grid. This is a hands-on data science role that combines production engineering with applied research.
Responsibilities
- Develop measurement and verification (M&V) methodologies and data science models that improve transparency and accuracy of advanced grid services across distributed energy fleets - Write production-grade code, prototype new data products, and apply machine learning algorithms to energy IoT telemetry - Translate one of the larger distributed energy datasets in the industry into actionable insights for utilities and other stakeholders - Partner with Data Science, Power Systems Intelligence, Data Engineering, Client Success, Product, and other cross-functional teams to refine forecasting and performance evaluation - Contribute to internal data management software systems supporting analytics and reporting workflows
Requirements
- Proficiency in Python and the scientific stack (pandas, numpy, scipy) - Strong SQL skills with working knowledge of data modeling and basic ETL/ELT practices - Practical understanding of core machine learning algorithms and familiarity with packages such as scikit-learn and TensorFlow - Demonstrated ability to extract valuable insights from large, complex datasets - Clear communication skills for explaining analysis results to diverse technical and non-technical audiences - Genuine interest in enabling a carbon-free, distributed energy future
Nice to have
- Experience with measurement and verification of control and optimization for distributed energy resources - Familiarity with Snowflake, dbt, and analytics engineering workflows - Hands-on experience with at least one BI tool such as Sigma, Tableau, or Looker - Cloud data science experience with platforms like Databricks, AWS, GCP, or Azure - Strong mathematics or statistics background - Power systems expertise, including three-phase distribution network modeling
