Staff Software Engineer

Role overview Lead the design and delivery of software for a billing team, building systems that help practices reconcile payments from insurers, patients, and other parties. The role combines full-stack product development with complex financial workflows, inconsistent partner data, and AI features used in day-to-day operations. You will own solutions through production and learn the billing domain with support from product, design, and engineering colleagues.

Responsibilities - Build services and features that track financial transactions, improve reimbursement, and handle billing edge cases. - Develop AI-enabled workflows and assess when their outputs need correction. - Improve a mature application while supporting customers who rely on it in production. - Work with product and design to scope, implement, and release improvements. - Monitor production systems, respond to issues, and coordinate with support teams. - Own larger features from planning through deployment, monitoring, and review of adoption.

Requirements - At least 8 years of professional software development experience for this Staff-level role, including technical leadership; the posting also lists 5+ years for other levels. - Production experience building and operating backend services and APIs. - Ability to work across the stack and in more than one programming language. - Experience with production alerting, observability, or instrumentation. - Clear communication with both technical and non-technical partners. - Interest in building with large language models and using AI tools in your work.

Nice to have - Experience delivering production features with LLMs or machine learning. - Python or PHP, MySQL, TypeScript, or React. - Background in payments, financial or ledger systems, event-driven or distributed systems, AWS, observability, or DevOps. - Familiarity with healthcare billing or claims.

Benefits and work setup The engineering team works fully remotely. This role is open to candidates in the United States, Canada, and New Zealand. The posting gives salary ranges of $170,000–$200,000 USD or $185,000–$215,000 CAD.
