Senior Software Engineer, Backend (Java) - All Genders

Role overview

Design and deliver Java backend services for a high-throughput, event-driven platform. The role includes API development, distributed system design and understanding how services work together across a broader codebase. You’ll work across technical and product boundaries to turn complex scheduling needs into reliable software, using AI tools while remaining accountable for the code you ship.

Responsibilities - Build, deploy and maintain scalable, high-performance backend services in Java. - Develop backend APIs, including GraphQL endpoints, with efficient data access and integration for frontend systems. - Create event-driven solutions with Kafka to support responsive and reliable data flows. - Trace workflows across services and understand how components interact throughout the distributed system. - Use LLM and agentic tools to speed up development while reviewing and understanding the resulting code. - Work with cross-functional colleagues to translate complex scheduling requirements into software.

Requirements - Strong Java backend engineering experience, with the ability to work across a codebase that also includes Go services. - Experience building distributed or event-driven systems; Kafka experience is relevant to the platform. - Experience designing and serving APIs, ideally with GraphQL. - A proactive approach to investigating unfamiliar code and taking ownership of delivered changes. - Must be based in Germany and authorized to work there; visa sponsorship and relocation support are unavailable.
