Data Engineering Manager

Role overview An Engineering Manager opportunity to lead a core data engineering team of roughly five to six consultants while remaining hands-on with delivery. The work covers data engineering, machine learning, MLOps, and cloud migration projects for enterprise customers across EMEA, primarily on the Databricks platform. The role is remote within Spain, with current scope to grow the broader data and AI practice from about 40 to 65 people over the next 12 to 18 months.

Responsibilities - Lead and mentor a squad of data engineering consultants, balancing people leadership with direct project delivery. - Oversee end-to-end delivery of data engineering, ML/MLOps, and cloud migration engagements, stepping in technically when needed. - Architect and optimize scalable, high-performance pipelines that move, transform, and store structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data across enterprise estates. - Build ETL and ELT workflows that ingest from sources such as Oracle, Snowflake, and Redshift, and apply modern open table formats including Delta Lake, Iceberg, and Hudi. - Partner with cloud, infrastructure, and data governance teams to ensure reliability, observability, and monitoring through modern tooling. - Coach consultants, run hiring and onboarding, and shape culture as the team scales or as a new sub-team is stood up.

Requirements - Consulting mindset with a focus on customer outcomes and the ability to advise on best-in-class technical solutions. - Stack-agnostic software engineering background with a solid grasp of distributed systems and modern engineering principles. - Hands-on experience with SQL and NoSQL systems, plus exposure to real-time processing, Apache Spark, or the broader big data ecosystem. - Demonstrated ownership mentality: identifies organizational gaps, drives solutions, and advises others on problem solving. - Readiness to lead people, whether through prior line management or informal experience leading project teams and owning delivery.

Nice to have - Prior experience growing high-performing engineering teams and contributing to hiring and culture-building. - Background enabling real-time and batch analytics workloads and migrating legacy estates to modern cloud environments.
