Remote job
Staff Software Engineer, Native Mobile
Job details
About this role
Role overview Staff Software Engineer on the App Infra team leading a greenfield rewrite of a high-traffic retail mobile app from a cross-platform JavaScript stack to native Swift (iOS) and Kotlin (Android). The role pairs hands-on engineering with technical leadership, using AI-driven agentic translation pipelines to rebuild every core surface for millions of users. You will set the architectural direction, raise the quality bar, and translate organizational strategy into the team's execution as product groups adopt the new native codebase.
Responsibilities - Own the architecture of core native app surfaces, defining module boundaries, visibility rules, and compile-time checks that keep the codebase scalable and consistent by default. - Stay deeply hands-on, writing and reviewing code across both iOS and Android repositories rather than directing from a distance. - Lead the agentic code-translation workflow, deciding which parts of the migration get automated and which require human review before scaling the team. - Improve developer experience for the native codebase through faster build speeds, smoother local workflows, reliable CI/CD, and clear architectural patterns and documentation. - Shape the dual-codebase synchronization strategy during the transition, designing daily automations and human review processes that keep the native and legacy codebases in sync. - Mentor mobile engineers across teams, defining best practices and fostering connection within the broader mobile engineering community.
Requirements - 8+ years of mobile software engineering experience with Swift/iOS or Kotlin/Android, plus working proficiency in the other platform and willingness to develop cross-platform fluency. - Track record of shipping high-quality mobile applications at scale, with direct ownership of architecture decisions, performance budgets, and release quality. - Deep knowledge of mobile performance optimization including cold start, frame stability, scroll behavior, and time-to-interaction, with experience profiling low-end Android devices. - Demonstrated ability to translate organizational strategy into team-level technical execution and secure cross-team alignment on timelines and standards. - Experience with AI-assisted code generation or LLM-driven development workflows, with sound judgment on what to automate and what to keep human-driven. - Experience improving developer experience through build systems, CI/CD pipelines, and release tooling adopted by other teams.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first environment with periodic in-person working sessions roughly quarterly. - The role reports into the Consumer & Business product group and partners closely with product teams as they onboard to the native stack.
