About this role

Role overview An Engineering Manager is sought to lead a team of engineers building and operating technology that makes public services more effective, while staying close to the craft as a hands-on contributor. This player-coach role owns the team's technical quality, the growth of its engineers, and the durability of its systems, with oversight across two to three projects. The position reports to the Director or Senior Director of Product Engineering and is remote within the United States, with travel expected at no more than 10%.

Responsibilities - Lead, coach, and develop engineers through regular check-ins and clear, candid feedback, creating growth opportunities and stretch assignments. - Provide oversight of technical delivery across two to three projects, monitoring progress, identifying and mitigating risks, and driving durable outcomes. - Mentor engineers on best practices and sound technical judgment, and lead by example. - Actively create conditions for engineers to own meaningful work with clear expectations and accountability. - Proactively address conflict directly, mediate disagreements between team members, and recruit and retain engineering talent aligned with the mission. - Contribute hands-on to one engagement while staying close to the craft through design and code review across the others.

Requirements - Significant engineering management experience leading teams that build and operate production software. - A track record of coaching engineers, giving direct feedback, and supporting professional growth. - Experience overseeing technical delivery across multiple projects, including risk identification and mitigation. - Demonstrated sound technical judgment and the ability to mentor engineers on engineering practice. - Experience with recruitment and retention of engineering talent. - Comfort balancing hands-on technical work with people leadership.

Benefits and work setup - Remote position; candidates must reside full-time in the United States. - Full-time schedule of 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, with internal meetings scheduled between 10 AM and 3 PM PT. - Open personal time off, a minimum of 14 paid holidays, and an org-wide closure from Christmas Day through New Year's Day. - Paid sick time up to 96 hours annually and 17 weeks of paid parental and family leave. - Three weeks of paid sabbatical after five years of service. - 401(k) with employer match and medical coverage with at least one no-cost option for full-time employees. - $500 annual professional development stipend, with up to $500 rollover each year to a $1,000 maximum. - Phone or internet reimbursement of $50 per month.
