Staff Software Engineer, Security Engineering
Job details
About this role
Role overview A remote-first opportunity for a Staff-level individual contributor to act as the technical lead for a security engineering team building a cyber risk management platform. The role combines hands-on backend ownership with architectural leadership, mentoring, and cross-team collaboration in a fast-moving environment that ships iteratively rather than relying on heavy process. Recent work has included launching an identity and inbox protection MVP, with additional products for new customer segments on the roadmap.
Responsibilities - Partner with product, design, and engineering to translate high-level goals into iterative delivery plans, shaping scope and contributing across the stack with a strong backend focus. - Own the technical vision, architecture, and evolution of the platform's backend systems, consolidating sprawling microservices into a simpler, more maintainable design. - Set and uphold high standards for code quality, code review, testing, and reliability while leveraging AI-assisted development tools to accelerate context gathering and implementation. - Lead a small team of engineers embedded in a larger security engineering group, mentoring on architectural trade-offs and unblocking peers through fast, thoughtful reviews. - Collaborate across departments to make and execute on technical decisions that affect multiple products and customer surfaces. - Participate in an on-call rotation (approximately one week every eight weeks) shared across the security engineering team.
Requirements - Proven experience designing and operating distributed, event-driven, cloud-based backend services in production, ideally using AWS-native messaging such as SQS or Kafka. - Demonstrated technical leadership through architectural influence, standards-setting, mentoring, and effective cross-team collaboration. - Strong proficiency in a modern backend language and framework; experience with Python and FastAPI is a plus, and Go is welcomed but not required. Comfort with TypeScript, Node.js, and React is also valued. - Hands-on, daily use of AI-assisted development workflows to generate the bulk of code and gather context quickly. - Solid experience designing, building, and maintaining APIs and integrating with third-party platforms. - A track record of simplifying complex existing systems, clear and direct communication, and a practical, outcome-oriented approach to problem solving.
Nice to have - Familiarity with security concepts and practices; prior cybersecurity experience is a plus but not required. - Empathy for end users and a product mindset, even if your background is not in massive-scale consumer systems.
Benefits and work setup - Remote-first organization with a small-team, high-ownership culture. - 100% medical, dental, and vision coverage. - Flexible paid time off. - Annual home office stipend plus access to co-working spaces. - Mental and physical health wellness programs. - Performance-based compensation with advancement opportunity.
