Role overview
A principal-level Forward Deployed Engineer role leading complex legacy system modernization initiatives from assessment through implementation. The position blends strategic architecture with hands-on technical involvement, applying AI-assisted development to reverse engineering, documentation, testing, and refactoring work for large enterprise clients.
Responsibilities
- Own the technical direction of modernization missions end to end, from initial scoping through transition and delivery. - Analyze legacy applications, architectures, dependencies, databases, and business logic to map existing environments. - Define transition architectures and modernization strategies, including progressive refactoring of legacy systems. - Guide refactoring of stored procedures and other database components tied to application logic. - Apply AI tooling to analyze codebases and produce high-quality technical documentation that informs modernization decisions. - Use structured AI-driven development workflows such as reverse engineering, Spec-Driven Development, and automated test generation. - Translate an initial mission into an actionable technical plan that evolves as new constraints surface. - Stay hands-on across architecture decisions, technical analysis, troubleshooting, and implementation as needed. - Communicate technical progress, risks, dependencies, and architectural decisions clearly to engineering teams and client stakeholders. - Act as the trusted technical interface between client stakeholders and the engineering team.
Requirements
- Experience leading system modernization projects in an architecture or technical leadership role. - Strong background planning modernization strategies for complex legacy environments. - Hands-on refactoring experience, including work with database stored procedures. - Familiarity with legacy Microsoft IE5 HTC and DHTML architectures. - Proven use of AI tools to generate technical documentation from existing codebases. - Practical knowledge of reverse engineering, Spec-Driven Development, and automated test generation. - Demonstrated ability to own an initial scope and evolve it independently for self and team. - Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
Nice to have
- Practical experience with AI development environments such as Cursor. - Hands-on involvement even when operating in architecture or leadership roles. - Experience with profiling, architecture analysis, or application intelligence tools such as CAST Imaging. - Fluent business English with strong client-facing communication. - Experience preparing project status reports for technical stakeholders. - Ability to coordinate other engineers while retaining technical ownership.
