Remote job
Senior BESS Inverter Performance Engineer
Job details
About this role
Role overview Investigate inverter performance problems across operating battery energy storage projects and coordinate with vendors to deliver, validate, and close corrective actions. The work spans technical root cause analysis, power system troubleshooting, and tracking retrofit rollouts across multiple sites.
Responsibilities - Analyze operating data, event logs, and site evidence to distinguish software, firmware, controls, hardware, design, and grid-related causes. - Prioritize issues and maintain vendor records of status, causes, corrective actions, validation, and closure. - Review firmware releases, design changes, and retrofit proposals for technical adequacy and operational risk. - Coordinate corrective actions, retrofit requirements, validation criteria, and schedules with vendors and site teams. - Troubleshoot inverter interactions with voltage, frequency, real power, and reactive power conditions. - Track affected assets, owners, deployment progress, validation evidence, risks, and closure using Excel, Smartsheet, or similar tools.
Requirements - Engineering degree in electrical, computer, mechanical, or a related field, plus at least five years in renewable energy or battery storage. - Strong understanding of inverter operation, dispatch controls, firmware and software behavior, controls logic, and hardware considerations. - Experience diagnosing inverter or storage performance issues from operational data and managing corrective actions or multi-site retrofits. - Organized follow-through across multiple technical issues, with clear communication to vendors, site teams, engineers, and managers. - Proficiency with Excel, Smartsheet, or comparable tracking tools. - Ability to travel up to 20%, sometimes on short notice.
Nice to have - Power systems knowledge, including grid-connected voltage control, frequency response, and real and reactive power behavior. - Familiarity with SCADA protocols such as DNP3 and Modbus, and industrial networks including fiber optics, switches, and TCP/IP.
Benefits and work setup The role may be based in Canada or the United States. The listed annual compensation is $100,000–$140,000 plus a bonus; the source also describes health coverage, retirement plans, and paid time off.
