Backend architect

Role overview Shape the backend foundation of a live production platform as it grows to support more clients, products, engineers, and automated agents. You’ll set architectural direction and implement changes incrementally, keeping the system reliable for current users while making it easier to understand, extend, and maintain.

Responsibilities - Own backend architecture, including system boundaries, component ownership, and interactions. - Model a complex domain so its data remains accurate, auditable, and resilient to errors. - Reduce unintended coupling so changes in one area are less likely to disrupt another. - Evolve production systems in careful steps while clients continue to depend on them. - Establish engineering practices that help both people and automated agents build safely and efficiently. - Make architecture decisions explicit in working code and explain their tradeoffs.

Requirements - Experience designing the core of a production system that other engineers build on, including living with the effects of those choices. - Strong knowledge of data modeling, databases, consistency, and changing data in live systems. - Ability to simplify designs and clearly explain tradeoffs. - A hands-on approach: architectural decisions should be delivered as code. - Strong general software engineering skills and ability to move quickly while protecting critical behavior. - Strong written and spoken English, and regular use of AI tools in engineering work.

Nice to have - TypeScript experience; the current stack uses Bun and Fastify, though engineers from other stacks may be considered. - Experience in insurance, fintech, or another domain where data must be exact and auditable.
