About this role
Role overview
Build and operate the APIs and services that support reliable, secure payment experiences across a global commerce and financial technology platform. This hands-on engineering role focuses on customer-facing payment APIs and the distributed systems behind them, with responsibility spanning design, implementation, production operations, incident response, and long-term reliability. You will lead complex initiatives, influence technical direction, and use AI-assisted tools while remaining accountable for correctness, security, and maintainability.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, maintain, and scale payment APIs with clear contracts, predictable behavior, and dependable backward compatibility. - Lead projects from ambiguous requirements through architecture, trade-off analysis, incremental delivery, testing, rollout, and ongoing maintenance. - Operate high-volume payment systems serving worldwide traffic, including participation in on-call rotations and incident response. - Improve performance, observability, fault tolerance, security, and operational automation to reduce recurring problems. - Translate payment requirements into reusable capabilities in collaboration with product and engineering partners. - Apply AI-assisted tools to design, implementation, testing, and debugging; review generated output critically and help teammates use these tools responsibly. - Contribute to technical decisions and develop others through design reviews, code reviews, documentation, and mentoring.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience building, maintaining, and scaling customer-facing financial or payment APIs, with a strong understanding of payment systems. - Experience designing and operating high-volume, highly available distributed systems where correctness, security, and reliability are essential. - Understanding of idempotency, retries, asynchronous processing, backward compatibility, partial failures, and financial integrity. - Track record of leading complex engineering work from unclear requirements into production while coordinating with partner teams. - Experience diagnosing production issues and improving systems through monitoring, incident response, and preventive engineering. - Fluency with AI-assisted engineering tools and sound judgment for validating code and protecting sensitive systems.
Benefits and work setup
- The source describes remote work, medical insurance, flexible time off, retirement savings, family-planning support, and other employee benefits. - U.S. compensation is described as location-dependent, with published pay zones ranging from $185,200 to $326,800 annually; final compensation depends on skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions.
