Staff Software Engineer

Role overview This is a senior engineering role on a Sync team responsible for the bidirectional data layer between a payment platform and major third-party accounting systems. The team owns high-traffic synchronization services used by the vast majority of paying small business customers and is re-architecting parts of the stack into new microservices. The work blends hands-on coding, technical leadership, and mentoring within a remote-first culture that values ownership, pace, and customer outcomes.

Responsibilities - Design and implement scalable, end-to-end features for the sync platform, taking initiatives from concept through launch. - Build and maintain microservices on AWS to support new sync capabilities and a 10x user experience improvement. - Lead and mentor a group of developers, driving code reviews, unit and automation testing, and CI/CD best practices across the SDLC. - Make step-function improvements to the performance, scalability, and reliability of the platform and its data stores. - Partner with product and business stakeholders to translate platform capabilities into solutions for real customer problems. - Explore and integrate generative AI tooling to accelerate engineering workflows, including prompt design and evaluation of LLM outputs.

Requirements - 8+ years of professional software development experience, including leading complex projects. - Expert-level proficiency in Java plus SQL and NoSQL databases. - Demonstrated track record of taking products through every stage of development, from scoping to launch. - Strong system design skills and experience with code reviews, unit testing, automation testing, and CI/CD pipelines. - Ability to lead a team of developers, set technical direction, and mentor junior engineers. - Business acumen and a passion for building customer-facing product experiences.

Nice to have - Experience building microservices on AWS. - Familiarity with React or Angular for frontend work. - Working knowledge of double-entry accounting, general ledger, AP/AR, or another accounting/ERP/payments domain. - Hands-on use of observability and feature tooling such as Splunk, Datadog, Mixpanel, or LaunchDarkly. - Interest in machine learning or recommendation systems.
