Job details
About this role
Role overview Develop and operate backend features for a service used across online storefronts. You will work with product and engineering partners to shape requirements, design changes, and carry them through release. The role also includes extending APIs for headless storefronts and helping support shopping experiences powered by AI agents.
Responsibilities - Build and maintain service features, partnering with product managers and other teams to define the problem and technical approach. - Extend GraphQL Storefront API queries and fields while following schema practices that preserve compatibility for existing integrations. - Improve support for AI-assisted shopping, including the ability for agents to browse products, create carts, and check out on a shopper’s behalf. - Investigate production issues and improve service performance and reliability. - Review code across contributing teams and develop design skills through reviews and pairing with experienced engineers.
Requirements - 5+ years building backend services that run in production. - Production experience with Scala or Kotlin is preferred; engineers with other backend language experience, such as Java or Go, who are ready to learn Scala are encouraged to apply. - Experience turning stakeholder requirements into a technical design and delivering the resulting change to production. - Working knowledge of HTTP concepts such as caching headers, cookies, sessions, and timeouts, plus familiarity with GraphQL APIs. - Familiarity with service-to-service communication and caching, and with production debugging using metrics, traces, or logs. - Experience with automated tests, CI/CD, and safe releases using feature flags or gradual rollouts; uses AI coding assistants and reviews generated code carefully. Interest in how agents use APIs is also expected.
Benefits and work setup The role is remote-first. Optional workspaces are available in Austin, Atlanta, and London for gatherings and collaboration. The stated national base salary range is $116,000–$195,000; final compensation depends on experience, qualifications, skills, and location. Variable compensation, equity, and benefits may also apply, subject to local policies.
