About this role

Role overview A product company is hiring a functional programmer to extend a custom-built e-commerce platform, integrate with digital marketplaces around the world, and support the release of new physical product lines. The team treats software as a strategic asset and emphasises craft, correctness, and graceful evolution over raw delivery speed. The role suits someone who naturally thinks in maps, folds, and algebraic data types and enjoys building systems that are observable, type-safe, and built to last.

Responsibilities - Design, build, and refine services within a bespoke e-commerce platform that underpins global product sales - Integrate the platform with international digital marketplaces and third-party systems as the catalogue grows - Collaborate across product design, data, logistics, and other functions to ship end-to-end solutions - Participate in team retrospectives and help shape a shortlist of continuous improvement tasks - Contribute to bi-monthly hack days, weekly functional programming meetups, and team learning rituals - Use dedicated cooldown time to improve personal skills, tooling, workflows, and the elegance of recently shipped code

Requirements - Two or more years of production experience in a functional language such as Haskell, Clojure, Elixir, F#, Scala (with libraries like Scalaz or Cats), OCaml, Erlang, or a strongly functional style of Rust, Kotlin, or Swift - A craft-focused mindset that values thoughtfully designed, durable code over quick fixes - Comfort working in cross-functional teams with designers, data scientists, and operations specialists - Intellectual honesty, autonomy, and a pragmatic willingness to choose a clever hack over a perfect abstraction when appropriate - Curiosity that extends beyond engineering into adjacent ideas, philosophy, and product thinking

Nice to have - Practical experience with Nix for reproducible builds and developer environments - Familiarity with the AWS ecosystem - Ability to read and maintain Ruby on Rails code that interfaces with functional services

Benefits and work setup - Remote work anywhere in Australia or New Zealand, with the option of an in-office presence in Australia - Dedicated learning budget alongside structured learning rituals including hack days, company-wide learning events, weekly functional programming meets, and mob programming sessions - A culture that expects intellectual honesty, grants meaningful autonomy, and treats business as a force for good
