Senior Engineer, Data

Role overview

A senior data engineering role on a civic healthcare technology team focused on improving public health outcomes through thoughtful service design. The engineer will scope, estimate, design, and deliver medium-to-large features across one or more products, influencing both backend data systems and user-facing interfaces. The position blends hands-on coding, data platform work, and team leadership within an Agile delivery model.

Responsibilities

- Apply test-driven development to build backend systems and user interfaces that integrate cleanly across the stack - Develop APIs, specifications, and data models that connect frontend applications with third-party systems - Design, implement, and maintain data interactions, optimizing for performance, scalability, integrity, and security - Build user interfaces informed by UX research that address real customer and end-user needs - Contribute to automated testing suites covering both functional and non-functional requirements - Reduce technical debt and deliver a consistent flow of features through established team processes

Requirements

- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field - Strong hands-on experience with Python and Apache Spark - Solid understanding of data modeling, ETL processes, orchestration, and distributed computing - Strong grasp of software design patterns, data structures, and algorithms - Experience working in Agile environments and using CI/CD pipelines - Background in analytic programming, data extraction, querying databases and data warehouses, and data analysis - Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with clear verbal and written communication, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively

Nice to have

- Hands-on work with AWS services such as S3, EC2, Glue, and Lambda - Experience with R or SAS - Professional Databricks or Apache Spark certification
