Role overview
This staff-level engineering role shapes a central data platform for clinical and scientific applications. You’ll lead design across foundational data models, APIs, and event pipelines, with two possible areas of emphasis: the breadth of platform systems and integrations, or the depth of PostgreSQL design, performance, and operations. The work calls for close collaboration with engineering, scientific, clinical, and product stakeholders, and careful handling of data access and integrity.
Responsibilities
- Lead architecture and technical design for complex data platform projects, using evidence to weigh trade-offs. - Build and evolve data models, APIs, event pipelines, and services that support clinical and analytical workflows. - Design reliable data delivery into a warehouse, considering replay, idempotency, and delayed consumers. - Investigate difficult problems across system boundaries and improve code structure, tests, and tooling as you work. - Write design proposals, gather feedback, and help teams align on implementation. - For the PostgreSQL-focused path, guide schema evolution, query performance, production operations, and access controls; teach and review database practices across the team.
Requirements
- Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience leading design of complex systems. - Ability to write and reason about complex SQL, schemas, indexes, query plans, and database behavior. - Experience translating stakeholder needs into dependable data services or integrations. - For the platform-focused path: experience with GraphQL, JavaScript or TypeScript, and event-driven systems. - For the database-focused path: deep PostgreSQL knowledge, including performance tuning, production operations, and safe schema changes under load. - Strong collaboration and communication skills, with an interest in data infrastructure for health.
Benefits and work setup
The role is fully remote within the United States, with optional in-person hubs in Boston, New York City, and Paris. The listed U.S. base salary range is $170,000–$190,000; the package also includes equity, paid time off, and other benefits.
