Senior Software Engineer, Computation
Job details
About this role
Role overview A senior engineering position focused on building and advancing the computation engines that power high-fidelity solar design at scale. The work sits at the intersection of backend software engineering and applied mathematics, translating physics, electrical models, and engineering constraints into reliable, performant systems used by thousands of installers. The role involves owning features end to end, from technical discovery through production release, and shaping the architecture of simulation and optimization infrastructure.
Responsibilities - Design, build, and maintain backend systems and computation engines that drive solar and electrical design workflows - Advance simulation and optimization work spanning PV and battery storage layout, component selection, and electrical configuration - Collaborate with product, design, research engineering, and QA to convert complex physical models and engineering constraints into scalable software - Shape the architecture of simulation and computation infrastructure to keep it correct, fast, and maintainable as it grows - Write clean, well-tested code and raise the engineering bar through design docs, code reviews, and established patterns - Mentor teammates and own services end to end, including participation in an on-call rotation
Requirements - 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend foundation - Academic background or equivalent skillset in computational mathematics, optimization, linear algebra, control theory, or numerical algorithms - Hands-on experience with simulation or optimization systems - Experience designing and building APIs, microservices, or data pipelines at scale - Sharp algorithmic thinking with the ability to reason about performance, correctness, and edge cases in computational systems - Proficiency in one or more backend languages such as C++, Python, or Ruby - Strong written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex technical ideas on a distributed team
Nice to have - Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in computer science, applied math, electrical engineering, physics, or a related field - Familiarity with solar PV and battery technology, or electrical engineering concepts more broadly - Experience with cloud-native compute infrastructure and batch or distributed processing systems - Genuine motivation to support renewable energy adoption - Track record of thriving when priorities shift and the pace accelerates
Benefits and work setup - Flexible paid time off policy - Parental leave - Stipends for working from home, coworking, and connectivity - Learning and development budget - Medical, dental, and vision coverage - Remote-first structure with team presence across multiple countries
