Founding Forward Deployed Engineer

Role overview

This is a founding forward deployed engineer position at a pre-revenue healthcare infrastructure startup automating the prior authorization process. The role is the technical front line for early pilot clinic deployments, going into real EHR environments to connect, configure, troubleshoot, and train staff, then bringing field learnings back to the engineering team. The position is remote with US hours required.

Responsibilities

- Set up and configure integrations into pilot clinics' EHR environments over FHIR, including data mapping and end-to-end verification that authorization data flows correctly. - Debug live production issues mid-deployment, including API errors, rejected payloads, and mismatches between staging assumptions and real clinic workflows. - Train and earn the trust of non-technical clinical staff such as front desk coordinators and practice managers who have seen multiple vendor promises fail. - Translate field findings into specific, actionable feedback for the engineering team so recurring mistakes get fixed at the source. - Build the deployment playbook from scratch during the first few pilot rollouts.

Requirements

- Hands-on experience integrating with EHR systems using FHIR and navigating the messiness of real clinical IT environments. - Strong live troubleshooting skills under time pressure with customers waiting. - Ability to communicate plainly and respectfully with skeptical, non-technical clinic staff. - Comfort working independently as a founding hire with no existing playbook to inherit. - Willingness to commit to an early-stage, pre-revenue company running its first pilot deployments.

- Experience training non-technical users on imperfect early-stage software and turning that feedback into product improvements.
